Gingivitis is caused by plaque, which accumulates on teeth after eating and drinking. If plaque is left on teeth too long, it hardens into a substance known as calculus or tartar. This tartar sits on the teeth and on their roots below the gumline, making it difficult to remove. Bacteria starts to destroy the bone supporting the teeth and if left untreated can result in loose teeth or, even worse, tooth loss.
